Job Seeker Draws On #BananasforCLT (also #Bananas4clt) Thunder In Pursuit for Role

Sabrina Jackson is like many other job seekers trying to break through the clutter of competition in Charlotte, and she’s figured out exactly how to do it, by capitalizing on the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce’s (@CLTChamber) #bananasforclt Social Media Twitter campaign aimed at Chiquita CEO Fernando Aguirre (@FdoAguirreCEO) rallying to bring jobs to Charlotte.

Realizing that the hashtag(s) will be at the top of search engine results for quite some time; Sabrina’s social media acumen devised the notion to use Google AdWords to post a job advertisement for herself, using the hashtag in the title or within the ad itself. If someone Googled:  #bananasforclt or #bananas4clt , Sabrina’s Google Ad would pop-up — prompting prospects to view her resume.

Sabrina’s intention is to entice potential employers with her creativity, and to also woo a particular employer she has in mind!

Caught between being Impressive. Mediocre. or Sucking.

My most recent interview with a Fortune (LMAO!!! ….random ….guy just walked past me walking like George Jefferson) ….ahem excuse me… My most recent interview with a Fortune 100 in Charlotte didn’t come to securing it fruition, and you want to know the reason why? The second interviewer thought I would get bored with the opportunity. I exemplified during my interview: poise, savvy, articulation, knowledge of the company, great answers, a fun conversation during the interview, passion for my career, depth of PR, and I stepped it up by giving press release lead examples for a media opportunity. I really showed my ass during the interview, showed it in a good way….but maybe too much? NO …heck NO! I know when it seems like I’m licking a companies ass…lol, and this was not the case. My initial thought was be prepared, because of the caliber of the company, you want to show them your aptitude that you’re a fit for the team.  —  What keeps tieing my panties in a bunch is that she said, she thought I would get bored, and suggested another opportunity that the company “may” have coming up — I’m thinking, why don’t you let me decide once I actually get into the company…I was pissed, disappointed (until I got a call the next day for another interview for a promising company in Charlotte)…but regardless it got me to thinking, and venting to friends. What the frick are they wanting?!!

One friend gave me an example, just based off knowing me for these few months — he said ” Sabrina imagine you are a “10” interviewing with three “6’s” in the room, one of the 6’s will get the job. ….. ‘scuse me? Not excuse me, but ‘scuse me! Whoa is me, did I miss something?! What’s wrong with being a 10?? I need a job right? I want a job correct? So why shouldn’t I come in there giving everything I have….it’s not a menial role that I’m going after — at least I don’t think they are, but I can’t understand why I need to play down my aptitude during the interview!

Okay, yes I’ve been told that I may be intimidating, but whose problem is that? I’m confident, my entire aura is that of Leadership and great Leadership Development! The Urban League has taught me well; that’s why I have such a great affinity for my organization. But according to my friend I need to think about either aiming higher (which I have, but they aren’t going to call me) or tone it down a little. I mean I’m not licking the employers arse in the interview, I’m just doing what a polished interviewer is supposed to do!

This post reminds me of an article I read in the Harvard Business Review Should You Hire an Overqualified Candidate

Please weigh in Readers? Because I’m confused.

Previous Title: …How’s the search going?

I had a few interviews in the past weeks…and both seemed really promising. One was with a local Fortune 100 here in Charlotte — the phone interview went really great, and fun by the way, the recruiter wanted me to talk with another person in the interviewing process (so imagine my excitement). However, I’m still waiting for the interview to be scheduled (is that common practice?) I ask that question, because I had the other interview recently, and the gentlemen over the phone said “I want to bring you in for a face-to-face” — so imagine my excitement there as well. (However, we have yet to schedule that interview)..yes it was only a few days ago…lol (patience grasshopper)

Which leads me to question, is this a ploy to say we really don’t want to bring you in, but this is a easier way for us get off the phone? …lol I hope not, because I’m really interested in both roles, and I just want to show these companies what I can do! I have so much energy built up from not working a FT role…that when I harness it into a company my zeal will be great! 😀 So with that I am going to keep my prayers up and motivation high, at times it’s really hard to, but God Willing something will come to pass. I’ve put in the hard-work, and I continue to do so, I just pray that it will pay off.

Also, this week I’m attending some of the Gray Golf Classic events #powernetworking. I met with Mr. Gray last week, and he graciously extended me the invite to the women’s brunch on Saturday. In addition, Friday there is a welcome reception, that I am told is pretty well attended.

Next week there is a (politics) House Fundraiser at the Mayors House, that I am looking to attend…yep the Mayors House! How awesome is that?! My goal is to fully immerse myself into the Charlotte community, as I did when I was in Milwaukee, I love community engagement, and my love for civic work will not stop.

p.s. follow #thinkingoutsideofjacksbox in my quest for that role as well 🙂
