Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (neurons) in the brain, that play vital roles in a variety of different behaviors. The major behavior affects of dopamine are movement, cognition, pleasure, and motivation. Let’s focus on the pleasure part of the brain — How we ‘can’ trigger the dopamine in our brain, is by creating new experiences for ourselves, this increases the neurons and creates a sense of pleasure.

I love and appreciate art — from the one to three dimensional exhibits & pieces. I used to love patronizing the Gallery Night & Day quarterly event in my hometown – Milwaukee, where I would peruse the numerous galleries and venues, which showcased new and established artists within the city.

One California artist, Kara Walker; whom I’ve known about for a few years –– her exaggerated drawing silhouette pieces; in my opinion are very uncanny and a little unsettling, but profound; salacious, but powerful; however, it somehow manages to hold my curiosity.

The Means to an End: A Shadow Drama in Five Acts, etching and aquatint by Kara Walker, five panels, 1995, Honolulu Museum of Art

KARA WALKER’s Art Installation at MoMA – “Gone: An Historical Romance of a Civil War as it Occurred b’tween the Dusky Thighs of One Young Negress and Her Heart”

I dare you not to be drawn in by her artwork.

Kara Walker discussion questions to mull:

  • Since their skin tone is made uniform by the black paper used to create them, how can you tell if they are black or white?
  • What is your response to these images?
